From the Chateau's airstrip at the junction of SH47 and SH48. This provides excellent views of the mountains' diversely shaped peaks. Mt Tongariro with its red, raw craters; the charred cinder cone.

Tongariro National Park contains active and extinct volcanoes, and a diverse range of ecosystems. The Park's dramatic landscape was the setting for Mordor in Peter Jackson's lord of the rings trilogy.
