New Plymouth  Port

A ship sits alongside the wharf waiting to unload its cargo, in the background clear skies as far as the eye can see. The main centre of Taranaki is the port city of New Plymouth. Dairy farming is the primary industry, however processing of natural gas, and oil exploration contribute significantly to the city's economy. Visible from New Plymouth, the picturesque Mt Taranaki is a magnet to skiers in winter, and to climbers in warmer months. Port Taranaki offers the shelter of Ngamotu Beach, plus picnic and play areas, and is consequently a highly valued recreational facility. Being the only deep water port on the New Zealand western seaboard, the lee breakwater is a mecca for pleasure boats and fishing.
