Opononi became famous in the 1950s because of the tame dolphin, Opo, who used to let children ride on his back. It features giant sand dunes which are accessible by water taxi. Accommodation includes motels, beachfront units, and private cottages for rent.

Location: Opononi, together with its neighbouring settlement Omapere, are situated in the heart of Hokianga, North Island, New Zealand.
