Although it's a bustling urban area, Hamilton has a park-like environment, and is surrounded by nationally acclaimed gardens, recreational lakes and protected gully system. The Hamilton Zoo boasts over 650 exotic and endangered species, and has one of the Southern Hemisphere's largest free-flight aviaries.

The magnificent Hamilton Gardens cover more than 58 hectares, and highlights include the Japanese Garden of Contemplation and a 15th century Italian Renaissance Garden.
