Primarily a farming district, the Manawatu offers a range of adventurous outdoor activities, particularly around the Rangitikei River where bungy jumping, flying fox and scenic chairlift rides are on offer at Mokai Gravity.

In the nearby Manawhatu Gorge scenic jet boat rides are on offer aboard the Hiwinui jet. The gorge is one of only a few places in the world where a river flows east to west through a main divide. A short drive south of Palmerston North is the village of Tokomaru, home of the Tokomaru Steam Engine Museum
